I received a comment by email, suggesting Signal as an option. I have Signal, but that app doesn’t give me a US phone number, which I need in order to receive text messages from the US. I need to be able to receive those text messages for the purpose of Two Factor Authentication, since I am an expat, and py Costa Rica phone can’t receive text messages from other countries. One of my accounts refuses to send 2FA OTPs via email, so I must have a way to receive text messages when trying to log in to that account. My concern is that if the app were compromised, allowing a hacker to pose as me, then 2FA would also be compromised.
