Home Q&A Forum Computer Help USB-C

If a computer feeds video and receives power by a USB-C will this computer dock with a USB-C dock no matter who manufactures it? My school has just replaced their staff computers with Dell computers using a single long USB-C cable from a dock. I do not want to buy a Dell computer. If I use one of my existing computers or the loaner computer at school I have to remove the VGA/Audio or HDMI cable and USB cable from the dock and I really don’t want to do this.

Hi Alan, isn’t there a separate power connection for the Dell computers? I thought my new Dell laptop could be powered through the USB-C port, but it wouldn’t power it or charge the battery. The USB-C only passes 5VDC, but the laptop requires 19.5VDC. I believe the USB-C port is just for passing audio, video, and data through. I need to do a little more research on that myself.

I am actually more interested in 2 things, compatibility, and the overwhelming desire to stay Mac. I hope I am not working on Friday so we can see how the show chat goes.

USB-C (Thunderbolt) does work with the docks in the classrooms. I don’t need to use the “smart” in the Smart Board but just project it.

See everyone Saturday. I work this afternoon.
