  • Internet Service on Vacation in Europe

Posted by Henry Louderbough on April 3, 2024 at 12:42 pm

I will be in Northern Europe for seven weeks this summer and will not have access to a secure internet connection. How can I safely check my credit card, bank, and investment accounts? How should I manage my cell phone service while I’m in Europe?

    Hello Henry,

You will want to reach out to your cell provider and see what they offer for a temporary international plan. And you should use a VPN app such as Express VPN when connecting to wireless networks while traveling.

      Thank you John.

Should I use the VPN with an unsecured wifi network (such as a hotel wifi) or use the hotspot on my phone?

    Hello Henry,

Depending on your plan, you may not want to use your phone as a hotspot. Using the VPN on unsecured networks will most likely be a lot faster.

    Thanks again John,

Do I understand correctly that I can use an unsecured network safely to access my financial sites if I use my VPN?

No problem, yes that is correct. The VPN will encrypt your data when you are on an unsecured network such as Hotel Wi-Fi.

Once I have ExpressVPN installed, do I need to turn it on when using the internet, or will it work automatically?

    Hello Henry,

You do need to turn it on when you want to use it. This goes for both your Phone and your computer.
