SLOW NEW LAPTOP
Brand New HP 17″ laptop running Windows 10 home.
Intel 5 processor, 12 Gigs RAM.
VERY SLOW to start, and then, slow to load Windows.
Any suggestions? Using a 6 month old Dell desktop with
similar options, and from day 1 fast starting, and fast
loading. Confused. -

It could be that the hard drive in your laptop is a cheap 5400 spin unit.
I have a Dell laptop that had a similar slow bootup issue. What I did is replaced the hard drive with a Solid State Drive and after doing so the bootup time was unbelievably fast.
A 512Gb SSD can be purchased for around $55. You will need to clone your existing drive first before you install the new SSD drive. You will have to purchase a SATA to USB cable for a 2.5 inch drive (price around $9.00), then you will need cloning software to clone your existing drive. I used “Macrium Reflect Free”. After the cloning process is completed, remove the old drive and install the new one. Have fun! -

Another thing you can do is test your current Hard Disk Drive using a tool from https://www.hdtune.com
Once you get the app installed make sure your OS disk is selected from the dropdown menu then click on the tab with the red + if you see anything critical or warning you will need to send your laptop in for warranty replacement of the Disk.Otherwise upgrading to an SSD just might be the fix you are looking for, another solution might be to perform a reset of the Windows operating system.

I believe with your laptop you would shut it down, then when you turn it on again start hitting the f2 key until you get the option to boot the diagnostic utility.

Followed the HP hardware testing and trouble shooting process recommended by John from Team Komando – not sure what went on, but as a result,
the startup is quick and normal.
