  • Figuring out what folder was created by what program

    Cleaning out my NAS; under “Backups” I have some very peculiar file folder names.
    For example: 6d275b1d12a4ad6a020d8881ab6581b13e189170_20201116165114_FullBackup

    and 00008030-00126D6421C2802E_20200519165157_FullBackup. Some say “IncreaseBackup” as opposed to “FullBackup”

    My questions are:;
    How do I know if this was created by Windows, Acronis, iTunes or AnyTrans/iMobie?
    Can I delete the old ones?

    All of the files are at least 2 years old, and folder sizes seem to be around 30GB in size (still scanning – Tree Size Free is not in a hurry today…)

    Hello Greg Blum,

    If you have newer full backups with the same syntax in the folder name, I would say it is fine to delete. It looks to me as if they are Acronis backups. You could right click on the folder an go to properties, investigate the Security tab to see which users / app user agents have permissions.

    You also could run a new backup with each of the apps and investigate the folder syntax after each backup to determine which app created the backup.

    Lastly you could dig into the folder to see if there is any type of file extension that would indicate which app made the backup, eg .txt, .iso, .img, etc.
