Format error external hard drive

      I have photos stored on an external hard drive. I use a WD My Passport with windows 7 , the drive is about 4 years old. I received a pop up error notice indicating, “I need to format my hard drive before I can use it.” Attempted restart and uninstall/install but still not able to use drive. How can I recover data without formatting disc and how do I proceed …do I need to download software to recover my photos?
