  • Help! anti-virus, dark web, VPN, all too confusing

Posted by Joanne on September 21, 2026 at 9:13 am

I’m trying to keep up with all the protections for my Mac/iPhone/iPad. So here is what I did today:

    1. I just got Nord VPN and removed Express VPN.

    2. I added Coveron but have not set it up yet. Nord /Coveron is asking for an authenticator app – I have a Mac, an iPhone and an iPad.I am a little confused. It seems I cannot complete install of Coveron without the authenticator app. Also there is a free Google Authenticator app. I know Kim has commented about “free” is not always ideal.

    3. I currently still have Incogni and TotalAV – should I remove those and replace Incogni with Nord Protect and TotalAV with WebRoot?

AGGGHHH I am trying to keep up with the protections and am paddling as fast as I can.

Anything you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Joanne,

I can understand the frustration. You’ve made several changes at once, and these products do different jobs. The good news is that you don’t need to replace everything today.

The authenticator request is a normal part of setting up Coveron through your Nord account. An authenticator gives you a short, changing code when you sign in. Since you use a Mac, iPhone and iPad, Apple’s built-in Passwords app can create those codes; you may not need to download another app. The free Google Authenticator app is also a legitimate option. “Free” by itself does not mean an authenticator is unsafe. Follow Coveron’s setup instructions, and save any backup codes Nord provides somewhere safe.

As for your other subscriptions, I would take a moment to pause and review before canceling either one. They do different things: Incogni removes your information from data brokers, while Coveron focuses on identity monitoring, alerts and recovery support.

Coveron may include Incogni benefits depending on the plan you purchased, so check what your subscription already covers before paying for both. You also don’t need to switch from TotalAV to Webroot just because you changed VPNs. They serve a different purpose from NordVPN. Check which devices your current antivirus plan covers and whether it’s working properly before deciding to change it.

My suggestion is to finish setting up Coveron first, then review your subscription details one at a time. You’re asking exactly the right questions. It’s fine to take this one step at a time.
