  • HELP! Can’t get rid of a program that downloaded itself

Posted by MerryC on August 25, 2020 at 10:14 am

My husband’s Windows 10 computer downloaded SAntivirus without him knowing. Obviously, when he downloaded another program it was checked and he didn’t see it. I tried everything to get rid of it as it will sometimes crash what he is working on or slows down the computer. It does NOT show up in PROGRAMS although in System Explorer it shows up, it is greyed out so I can’t dismantle it there either. How do I get rid of this totally unwanted program?

    Hello MerryC,

If you are able to boot into safe mode then download and install Malwarebytes Free, you should be able to remove the infection yourself. Alternatively if you have a backup from last month your best bet would be to perform a restore. You might even want to consider

If you take a look over here at malwaretips.com they will walk you through removing the infection. Essentially you will be booting Windows into safe mode and then running the Anti malware Software to clean up your machine. Safe mode is bare essentials environment that will not start any third party applications allowing you to remove the infection. If you were running a full version of Malware bytes this would have prevented the installation of the malicious software.

Thank you John. I have the paid version of malwarebytes on my husband’s computer but apparently it didn’t stop it from coming in. I will go to your link and see if there is a way malwarebytes can get rid of this.

    Hello again MerryC,

As a last ditch effort if you are unable to remove the software you can perform a clean re install of Windows 10 while keeping your files, you can find that how to on komando.com.

Thank you again John. I will try everything you said including malwarebytes premium which I have already on there, in safe mode. Then if all else fails, a reinstall. My husband knows now that if something has to be downloaded, let me do it lol.
