My iMac computer has been making a clicking sound for several weeks now. It sounds like an On and Off switch. What does this mean? Is my computer dying? PLEASE, HELP!!
      Thanks,
      Sandy Landers

      Hello Sandy,

I would start off by making sure the power cable is secure on both ends and that you have a complete time machine backup in place. Once you let me know your model, I can further assist.

Click or tap here to see how to identify your model of iMac.

      Hi John,
Thanks for responding to my question. I am using an iMac MacOS Monterey, Version 12.4
      Imac Retina 4K , 21.5 inch 2017, Processor: 3.6 GHZ, Quad-Core Intel Core 17, Memory 16GB 2400 MHZ DDR4, Startup Disk Macintosh HD, Graphics Radeon Pro 560 4GB, Serial # D25Y14YWJ16C
FYI: I just did a new complete backup to a 5T External Drive as my new Time Machine Backup
      Does this help?
      Thanks,
      Sandy Landers

      Hello Sandy,

Please unplug the external hard drive to make sure that it is not the device that is making the clicking sound.

Is the sound similar to this video here?

Or is it more like this sound here?

Do you notice the clicking to happen more often when the iMac is under load, say like when playing back a large video file stored on your computers Hard Disk Drive?

      HI John,
Sorry for the delay in responding. I listened to both the video links you sent. It is NOT like the last one and not exactly like the first one. It is similar to the first one but slower with a pause in between the click sound. I did unplug my external drive and it was not that and the clicking sound seems to happen when the machine is not being used and sitting idle. I usually keep it in Sleep mode at the end of the day. Does this help any?
      Thanks,
      Sandy

      Hi John,
Problem loved. The clicking sound was NOT from my computer but from my Battery Backup!
      Thanks,
      Sandy Landers
