Hi Nicole, apologies for the gap in response time we’ve been catching up on a few questions from the past few months that slipped past us, and thanks for sharing this, it’s a smart question to ask before spending any money.
Short answer: you probably don’t need to go back to school for a four-year degree. For tech support roles specifically, employers care more about certifications and hands-on skills than a second BA which you can find tons of by searching online.
On the AI question: entry-level tech support is changing, a lot of Tier 1 ticket triage is getting automated. But that’s pushing the job toward more complex troubleshooting, and toward roles that blend support with other skills, which is where your web design interest comes in. Web support, website maintenance, and small business IT/web hybrid roles are growing, and they’re harder to automate because they require judgment and design sense together.
Given you already have a business degree and enjoyed those web design classes, consider a short paid bootcamp in web development or web support to test whether that spark from high school is still there before committing serious money anywhere.
Start with a free or cheap option, see what clicks, then invest in the cert or course that matches. You don’t have to bet the whole budget upfront.
