Looking for more guidance on moving from Gmail to StartMail Such as, what happens to my ability to access things like youtube or other Google products if I eventually close my Gmail accounts?

When you sign up for StartMail they give you access to a tool called ShuttleCloud migration service. This service will migrate up to 20GB Personal account and up to 30GB if it is a business account.

1) Thank you John, but that is not the question. I have read somewhere that if you don’t have a gmail account, you may not be able to access things like youtube, etc. So my question is – if after I change and migrate to startmail, and subsequently close my gmail, what do I do or how do I access things such as youtube. (If gmail is as worthless as Kim states, then I really don’t want to have anything to do with them).

2) On a separate question – I am also hesitant to switch (but I want to) because I have never seen anyone with a startmail account – i.e. no emails from anyone, including Kim, using a startmail email. Any insight?

Hello Benjamin,

Sorry, I missed that second part of your question. Moving your email to a new host does not delete your Gmail account, you will still be able to use that with their services.

Kim’s recommendation is a fact as Google reads your emails to serve you ads based on their content.

You need a Google Account to sign in to YouTube. A Google Account works across all Google products (like Gmail, Blogger, Maps, YouTube, and more).

On your last question, I have a StartMail account as my own personal email account.

Thank you John, very helpful. Just an update – once I move I will probably keep one of two of my gmail accounts open for other uses (actually I will probably keep both open for sometime before I shut one down), but don’t plan to use it for much anymore.

However, with that said, I did get the following response from StartMail: “Your ability to visit Youtube.com will not be affected by using StartMail. You will need a Google account to use other Google services that require a Google account.”

So it appears you do not need gmail for youtube.
