This started about 4 months ago on my Pixel 4a for no known reason. When I get a text message the phone would give absolutely NO indication of a new message — NO sound and NO icon at the top of the screen! I tried everything I could think of and nothing helped.
I then decided to upgrade to a Pixel 6a thinking that might solve the problem. The same exact thing was happening on the 6a, except that now I usually get an icon at the top of the screen (but still NO sound). Other app notifications make sound like normal — just not incoming texts.
I spent over one and a half hours on the phone working with Google Customer Service trying every conceivable combination of settings and in the end, they said to do a factory reset — which is not an acceptable answer to me.
So I today upgraded to Android 13 hoping that would help. Nope. Still no sound from incoming texts. Somebody, please tell me what to do so I will KNOW when a text message arrives. Thanks in advance.
Hello Jim,
Check this setting I found it by going to messages>settings>notifications>tap the words “incoming messages”>advanced>sound. I suspect you have the sound set to none.
If that does not work, perform a backup of important data and then factory reset by doing the following.
From a Home screen, swipe up to display all apps.
Navigate: Settings. System. Reset options. …
Tap. Erase all data (factory reset).
Tap. Erase all data.
Tap. Erase all data.
John, Thank you so much! I spent another hour and a half on the phone with Google just this morning to absolutely no avail. Your first suggestion worked like a charm. It was a setting NEVER even mentioned by Google in the total of 3 hours on the phone with them. You made my day, and I deeply appreciate it. May God bless you. Jim
