I’ve been using Text to Speech on the Mac for years. It is great for editing and I use it to learn languages. I’ll use an Italian voice to read Latin. It is 98% correct in pronunciation.

When Apple went to Catalina, it changed the Text to Speech engine to identify the language on the fly. Although I set the language to Italian for reading Latin, the output jumped from French, to Spanish, to Catalan, to Portuguese, to… and to Italian occasionally. Totally useless. I downgraded to Mojave where I remain today.

Is there another way to speak a text selection in a set language?
