I just heard about the Textme app for smart phones that would enable etxting and voice calls over the internet. I am trying to find out if that app is secure from malware and snooping.
I received a comment by email, suggesting Signal as an option. I have Signal, but that app doesn’t give me a US phone number, which I need in order to receive text messages from the US. I need to be able to receive those text messages for the purpose of Two Factor Authentication, since I am an expat, and py Costa Rica phone can’t receive text messages from other countries. One of my accounts refuses to send 2FA OTPs via email, so I must have a way to receive text messages when trying to log in to that account. My concern is that if the app were compromised, allowing a hacker to pose as me, then 2FA would also be compromised.
That was me and when I realized that they didn’t offer what you needed, I deleted the post. You should be able to take advantage of using Google Voice as an alternative to Text Me to use for 2fa however you cannot use it for your google accounts 2fa. The problem is that a lot of the virtual phone numbers are being blocked from being used to sign up for new accounts. Depending on who your cell phone provider is they may offer a solution like Verizon & At&t does to get around not receiving text messages while out of the country.
Let us know who you support carrier is and we can see what they have to offer.
It looks like you may be able to take advantage of T-Mobile Digits, additionally they offer an additional number for talk and text for $10.00 a month if added to AutoPay.
