  • Using old hard drives as external drives

Posted by Alice Moore on June 22, 2024 at 4:00 pm

I have two older computers. One runs on W7 and the other on W10. The W7 computer was still booting up the last time I tried it, but it’s been months; so I’m not sure what its status is. The W10 computer’s mother board died, but the SSD hard drive is still good. What I’d like to do is get a case that I can use to access these drives as external drives on my current computer, which is still running W10.

Do you have any suggestions? I’m pretty good at figuring out new software, but I’m hopeless when it comes to anything more complicated than plugging in a peripheral via a USB port.

    Hello Alice,

Tap or click here for a 2.5′ SATA SSD USB enclosure that will allow you to use your SSD as a backup drive.

I know some measurements refer to different things. I have an old internal hard drive from a computer about six years old that I need to access. The case is 4″W x 5.75″L x .75 H. Looking quickly, I can’t find an adapter that holds a hard drive that size. Any advice?

      Hello Keith,

Those are some odd measurements, did you use a ruler or a measuring tape? Is there any information on the drive such as Make or Model number?

The measurements were with a ruler and I double checked it last night. It’s a Seagate Barracuda, and it shows a PN 2FR102-300. I’d be willing to plug it internally into another computer, but I’m concerned that there could be conflict with the OS on the old C: drive.

I appreciate any insight you can give me.

    Thanks, Keith
