    Kim,

I scanned your suggestions on destroying the data on old hard drives including hammers and drills. I don’t think I’ve seen this one.

After running Eraser to overwrite the data, would it work to mix up an Epsom Salt (or other salt) brine in a container and soak the old hard drive for a week or so? Electronics and water don’t mix; I doubt that hard drives are water tight; and the salt should encourage corrosion.

    Just a thought.

    Hello Don,

Once running Erasor you really don’t have much to worry about. If you want to take an extra step I recommend taking the hard drive apart and removing the platters, placing them in a pillowcase or a couple of bags and smashing the platters.

    John,

I know how to take a drive apart, but was thinking of those people who might be able to get the drive out, but don’t have the tools or ability to disassemble the drive. I’m looking for a technique that is quick and dirty, but effective enough. … or you could take the Kim-approach and shoot the drive with an AR-15. (old story if I remember correctly)

    Take care,
    don
