Gil from Prescott, Arizona wonders if it’s possible to set up an Echo Dot to drop in on someone who lives in a senior home.
For those of you who don’t know, the Amazon Echo’s Drop In feature facilitates instant conversations between your devices or with your Alexa contacts. Check out my handy guide on the Drop In feature.

Here’s a quick breakdown. When you want to talk to someone who’s out of earshot, just say, “Alexa, Drop In” and say the name of the Echo device you want to speak through. On the other hand, when you receive a Drop In, the light indicator on your Echo pulses green so you can connect immediately.

I told Gil to get a third-party base, which would let the Echo Dot for his recipient run off a battery. This way they wouldn’t have to worry about cords.

Here’s a battery base for the Gen 4 Echo Dot.

Here’s a battery base for the Gen 3 Echo Dot.

Drop In is just one of many cool Echo features. Want to discover some more cool skills? Here are the top 20 Alexa commands you’ll want to try out.
