Thank you so much for your reply! I have both a Kensington Expert Mouse which utilizes a usb port on my tower and a desktop mouse that uses and a desktop mouse that uses a port on a hub sitting on my desktop. Unfortunately, neither work when this happens and yet when I hit cntrl+alt+delete both reactivate. Such a strange problem, could it be a problem with my motherboard or perhaps a needed update for my motherboard?
