If you would like to have a local backup I recommend using a mail client installed on your computer.
If you are using Windows or Mac you can use Thunderbird mail client to connect to your AOL account, if you configure Thunderbird to download entire emails and not just the message headers this will ensure you have a backup copy stored locally on your computer instead of just AOL servers.
