Hi. I have used an Arris Surfboard SBG6782-AC Wireless Cable Modem Gateway since April 2016. If I were to get a mesh system would any changes need to be made? But, what if I were to get an updated router, is there any way to separate the router function from the modem so I could keep the modem, but get better reception on all my devices with a better router? Or would I need a new modem too? Thank you for cutting the problem down to size. I’m not sophisticated in this realm.

You would need to disable the wireless radio on the Arris, HERE page 15 gives you the default credentials for the device and steps for logging in.

Then the screenshot HERE shows where you can disable the wireless radio. After that you can now connect the WAN port on your new wireless router to any port on the Arris device.
