I have a PC running Win 11 Pro that serves / stores files for 3-5 users. That PC uses Synology drive client to backup to a Synology NAS. Additionally, there is a removable drive that the NAS supports for off site backup

There is a new requirement to encrypt the data that’s being stored on the PC, the NAS, and the removable drive. I’m aware that Bitlocker can be installed on the PC and I also know that the V7 Synology OS has it’s own encryption method.

Will Synology backup and restore a Bitlocker drive? If it does and the PC drive fails will the data on the NAS be able to be restored and decrypted? If this isn’t the right approach are there other recommendations?

    TIA

    Hello Dave Soos,

If you keep the USB disk attached to your computer and it is BitLocker enabled, your Synology drive client will not have an issue backing up and in turn even restoring to a secondary disk.

When using BitLocker you really need to make sure you have a couple of backup copies of your BitLocker key, tap or click here to see how.

Thanks John. To be clear, the USB drive is attached to the NAS and files are copied to it using Hyper Backup at a specific time of day after the Synology Drive Client copies data from the PC to the NAS. Does that change your answer? How do I Bitlocker enable the USB drive?
