You should first configure a new Gmail account, then you will want to configure mail forwarding on your AOL account by following the write-up here.
Then you will want to configure a vacation message response from your AOL account so that when someone emails you the vacation response will let them know of your new email address. You can configure a vacation response by following this write-up here.
Gmail will in turn filter out most of the unwanted emails.
