This is new issue for me. When I plug my WD external drive into my macbook air, it is recognized and then disappears so I can’t use it. Sometimes is crashes the computer also. Has anyone else had this issue and resolved it? Thanks for any ideas.

    Hello M80,

It sounds like a hardware failure, it could be the USB cable or even the backup drive itself that is failing, have you tested with another external hard disk drive? I would be sure to get a good copy of your data from that disk before it does fully fail.

Can you try the External Hard Drive on another Mac?

Thanks for the suggestions . It ended up my particular year MacBook Air doesn’t have a fan that is able to cool long term external drive use. It is a great computer for normal use but not for how I was using it. I sold it and got a MacBook Pro with a fan and I am now able to use my external drives the way I need to. Yay!
